Step One: Prevention
The first step is removing squirrels from your home and property is prevention. Take away the things that will attract them to your home in the first place. Remove any and all food sources from your lawn. Rake up any nuts, berries or acorns on your lawn. Invest in sealable trash can lids and keep your trash covered at all times. When dealing with squirrels in your attic, start with sealing off all entry points except for the ones the squirrels use the most. Cover the points with things squirrels won’t be able to chew through such as: flashing made of aluminum, mesh made of steel and sheet metal. Then use caulk or foam sealant to close off the holes. As soon as all the squirrels are gone cover up the last entry point in the same fashion. You can also invest in a one-way door, this lets squirrels out of your home but not back in.
Squirrels also like quite dark places, drive them out by placing a cool-burning LED light by their nest and playing talk radio all hours of the day. This will make their living space unbearable, and they’ll leave. Removing one squirrel is easier than dealing with a family, when you’re dealing with a family extra caution needs to be used.
When you’re Dealing with a Family
It is important when you are trying to remove squirrels from your home to make sure there are no babies present. Babies stay close to the mother for at least three months and if you remove the mother and not the babies you’ll have two likely things will happen. The first being a desperate mother trying any which way to get back in and frightened babies who want to get out or the mother won’t be able to get back in and you’ll have a litter of dead baby squirrels on your hands.
