Ottawa, ON Wasp Removal

Your backyard barbeques are the talk of the neighbourhood… it’s all about the good food, family, and friends.  This time everyone is invited, but Aunt Martha’s lemonade seems to have attracted a few unwelcome guests.  Here’s a question:  are those bees or wasps buzzing around the punch bowl?  We are Ottawa’s best pest control, and our experts are trained to identify, eliminate, and prevent pest infestations on your property.  We’ll answer all your questions about bees and wasp removal.

Visual differences between bees and wasps.

Though they are often mistaken for each other, bees and wasps are two very different insects.  Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that a honeybee has a stubby, fuzzy body and flat back legs.  Wasps are slim, narrow-waisted, their bodies are smooth, and their back legs are cylindrical.

Behavioural differences between bees and wasps.

Honeybees are pollinators, they are happy simply flying from flower to flower gathering and distributing pollen.  They also feed pollen to their young.  Wasps, on the other hand, are predators.  They spend most of their time hunting other insects to feed to their young and are more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviour.  Wasps are also attracted to sweet foods and are the ones most likely to be buzzing around the lemonade stand.

Nesting habits.

Bees build their “hives” by stacking several wax cells on top of each other, usually in trees, walls, or holes, and most often their hives are manufactured by beekeepers in order to harvest their honey.  Wasps build their nests in quiet, hidden places like under porches, and they’re constructed of chewed up papery fibre formed into one or more cones.  This is good to know if you’re trying to locate and remove them from your property.

Stinging habits.

Both insects have the capacity to sting you, but the honeybee will only sting if provoked.  The more aggressive the wasp can sting you just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Both sting by injecting venom via their stingers, which are attached to their bodies.  While the wasp can pull it’s stinger out and sting again several times, the honeybee’s stinger is barbed so when it tries to fly away, it’s stinger and parts of its vital organs are left behind, and it dies.  The victim of the honey bee sting must then remove the stinger as soon as possible so as to prevent further injection of venom.

When to call the professionals

If you have several bees or wasps buzzing around your backyard, chances are their nesting nearby.  Wasps aggressively defend their nests, so you don’t want to take the chance that you, your children, or pets will accidentally disturb them.   Wasp removal is best left to the professionals.  We are Ottawa’s best pest control, and our operators are standing by waiting for your call.  One of our highly trained technicians will contact you right away to set up an appointment and you’ll be on your way to being pest-free.
