Doing it yourself? Here’s what you should know:
There are several different ways to catch a rat, some work better than others. Spring traps for rats are similar to the traditional mouse trap, only larger. They’re strong enough to break the rat’s spine, or anything else it comes into contact with-- like your finger! Cage traps are safer and promote live catching, the rat enters the cage, takes the bait, and the cage lowers down and traps it. You just need to decide what to do with the rat! Glue traps are non-poisonous but lethal to the rat. When they become stuck, cannot escape, and die of asphyxiation and hypothermia. Electric traps are battery operated and send a lethal dose of electricity once the rate takes the bait.
Trap placement.
If you decide to take matters into your own hands and opt for any of the above rat traps, there are a few things you should know about trap placement. First of all, rats are more intelligent than you think. They become very suspicious when something new is introduced into their environment, so when you load a trap with bait, whether it be cheese or peanut butter, don’t expect them to take it right away. You may need to leave the bait on an unset trap for a few nights in a row until the rat becomes used to it. Also, use gloves to avoid leaving your scent behind and further arousing their suspicion. Rats have poor eyesight and do not like being in open areas. Place the traps parallel against the walls, in corners, under furniture and in closets.
Be patient.
This may take several days, and several traps. Also, never add rat poison to food as as an alternative to traps as they tend to drag their food around. You could be spreading rat poison around your house without knowing it, making it a dangerous environment for pets, children, and yourself. The rat may end up dead, but where and when will you find it?
