Bats are Pests Too

Aside from very of the most common pests such as roaches, rodents, ants and many others that seem to plague many properties, bats also pose an issue as well for property owners and managers. Although they are ideal for our environment as they keep down the population of mosquitoes and many other flying insects, bats still pose a problem.

Where Do Bats Tend To Dwell?

The issues that arise with bats is that they choose to dwell in attics, and the walls of various buildings such as houses, condominiums, and apartments. They opt for such spaces as they provide optimal conditions for nesting and supporting their young. These areas deliver warmth, concealment, safety and comfort for bats.

Another interesting but problematic characteristic of bats is that they tend to be nocturnal. This can cause distress to the inhabitants of a building. Amplified activity during the night can anger building occupants as sounds and loud shrieks elicited from the bats disrupt slumber and cause great turmoil.

Health Risks Posed By Bats

A bat can live quite a long life as they live for up to 20 years.  However, the fruition of a bat population is impaired by the slow birth rate of the bat. Unlike other pests who tend to give birth to numerous offspring at once, bats give birth to one baby bat or pup per year. Although this may not seem as horrifying, it is important to note that the presence of bats can be unhealthy.

Very severe and fatal diseases have been linked to bats. These creatures are recognized as the primary carriers of rabies. Exposure to rabies can occur when a person is bitten and is also through the transmission of saliva if it comes into contact with a person’s eyes, nose, mouth or an open incision. The untreated effects of rabies can often times be fatal.

Pest Experts Are Key To Bat Control

Histoplasmosis is also a disease that is carried by bats and is caused by airborne bacteria that are released into the air by the fecal matter.  This disease affects the lungs of its victim and potentially other organs of the body and if left untreated can be fatal.
